My reading Log

I’ve always been a fan of junk journalling as a creative outlet, but I’ve never been tempted to do it myself because I’ve always felt like they didn’t have much of a purpose. Why would I make something that I’ll never look at again? But then I discovered that I could marry junk journalling with anything!

I’ve talked recently about crafting a scrapbook for my son in this style, and I plan to start compiling a wedding album in this this style, too. One thing I have not thought about until I watched my favorite YouTuber do it is a junk journal reading log. So I dived right on in!

To track what books I want to read or have already read, I use Goodreads, but I would love to have a physical log of the books I read each year. Having yet another creative outlet is a plus, too! So I started a book log. Using the book covers or the plot as my inspiration or theme for the journal page, I began putting together a collage of junk as a background for my reading log.

The contents of my reading log are just as important as the decorations. I start by pasting in the book cover, listing the dates I read it, giving it a rating out of 5 stars, briefly mentioning my thoughts on the book, and adding in a favorite quote or two.

Being home with the baby, I have read more in these past four months than I have since I was in college, so I have a lot of catching up to do! I managed to complete pages for the nine books I read in January, and I’m confident I’ll get caught up to April in the next couple of weeks.

The thing I love most about creative projects like junk journalling, scrapbooking, writing, and even crocheting, is that they are so easily stopped and started. I get fixated on an activity and obsess over whatever it is until I have gotten completely burned out on it. I can get in a reading mood and not move for four hours without realizing its been four hours. I can start working on scrapbook pages and not realize two hours have gone by. But when I’ve been doing it for several days and the bug leaves me, I have no motivation or desire to get back into it. I am not a person who can work at something a little along. I want to do a project from start to finish, and if I can’t, I will quickly lose the motivation to.

With my reading log journal, I can create pages for the books I’ve read until I’m bored of it, and when I’m in the mood to junk journal, I can pick it back up and obsess over it for a few hours to catch back up! With my son’s scrapbook that is set up to be monthly updates, I can obsess over the two pages for that month and then I have a month of exploring other things until I circle back around to it!

In other words, my life is a never-ending cycle of revolving hobbies, each taking the place of what came before only for a short while. When I’m in a reading mood, I will read and only care about reading. When I’m in a scrapbook mood, I will scrapbook and only care about scrapbooking. When I’m in a writing mood, I will write and only care about writing. Starting this reading log is only the current obsession!

I’ve included pictures of the pages I have completed in my journal so far!
